What to buy in Mallorca: typical products to bring home

If you want to take the flavour of Mallorca home, or send it as a gift, food is a better souvenir than most. This guide lists the typical products of the island and how to choose them.

Typical products of Mallorca

  • Extra virgin olive oil, especially from the Serra de Tramuntana.
  • Sea salt, often with aromatic herbs.
  • Artisan pâtés, including olive pâté.
  • Sobrasada, the spreadable cured sausage seasoned with paprika.
  • Ensaimada, the spiral sweet bun.
  • Almonds and almond sweets.
  • Hierbas mallorquinas, an herb and anise liqueur.

What travels best

Non-perishable products such as oil, salt, jarred pâtés and almonds survive the trip well. Fresh or very perishable items, like cheese or ensaimada, need quick delivery and specific packaging.

If you are visiting the island

Village markets, producers' shops and delicatessens are good places to taste before you buy. Think about how you will carry what you buy: liquids have limits in hand luggage and glass is fragile in a suitcase.

Ordering online instead

Buying online avoids the luggage problem and lets you reorder after the trip. Look for shops that name the producer and the origin of each product and show the harvest year on oils.

At MallorcaGourmet

We work with small producers on the island. Browse our olive oils from Mallorca, Mallorcan pâtés and sea salt and seasonings. For something simple to start with, try the ingredients of pa amb oli: oil, salt and pâté.

Gift ideas by budget

  • Small gift: a pâté or a herb sea salt.
  • Medium gift: a bottle of olive oil, or a set of oil, salt and pâté.
  • For someone who has everything: a new-harvest blend from a small producer.
